Love Addiction
Are you really in love? This is an excellent question to ask yourself, as you consider whether or not the relationships in your life are truly based on love, or are simply a result of love addiction. Love addiction is the somewhat strange condition of being addicted to the notion of being in love and in a relationship with someone you can label your ‘partner’.
Love addiction encompasses two different categories of addicts – those who are addicted to the idea of being in a relationship, and those who are addicted to a particular relationship. The first category of people suffering from love addiction are simply people who, due to a lack of attention and affection at some point during their lives, have idealized the notion of being in a relationship. Their addiction to this so-called ‘love’ can be seen in the way they are unwilling to give up their current relationship despite any number of problems or difficulties. Love addicts of this definition are also extremely quick to enter a new relationship immediately after the termination of the previous one.
Individuals who suffer from the second form of love addiction are a particular relationship or partner. This is often due to their belief that they have found the ‘perfect partner’ and are thus unwilling to terminate their relationship at any cost. Those with love addiction of the second form often idolize partners who are stable and independent, offering them a sense of safety and security.
